Abstract

Although Green Consumerism has grown into a multidisciplinary field of research, current reviews are divided into disconnected subsections and lack a unifying, encompassing viewpoint on the field's intellectual framework, underlying theories, and methodological patterns. This study builds on this by combining bibliometric analysis with a systematic review based on the theory, context, characteristics, and methodology (TCCM). We follow the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to analyse 125 open-access articles and 51 core studies, both indexed in Scopus and open access, from 2005 to 2025, using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer. The results reveal that the field of green consumption has become a well-established research domain, with publication numbers increasing in 2019 and peaking in 2024. The results of keyword and thematic analyses demonstrate five dominant research themes: behavioural, ecological, circular economy, food, and digital sustainability. The results of the TCCM show the predominance of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, an increase in theoretical diversification, a high concentration on fashion and food companies, a high absence rate for Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, and the dominance of quantitative survey-based SEM (PLS-SEM) with very limited qualitative, longitudinal, and experimental research. This paper, although constrained by the limits of English-language, Scopus-indexed, open-access studies, offers valuable insights for researchers, marketers, and policymakers and marks the first study to extensively map green consumerism research for the period 2005-2025 through both comprehensive bibliometric research and a TCCM review.
